It is much too common for people to neglect the Mattresses they sleep on.

They don’t see why one should spend money on something you hardly ever see. What a mistake!

Mattresses are an integral part of your life and should not be ignored. They are undoubtedly one of the most important purchases you can make.

After all, you do spend anywhere from six to nine hours on them a day. Nothing impacts how well you sleep more than the quality of your mattress. Buying a mattress isn’t just a matter of comfort. Quite a few factors come into play.

The quality of the springs, foam and outer covering are all things that cannot be ignored. Most people try to spend as little money on Mattresses as possible and this leads to problems.

They are never really able to figure out why they feel tired during the day and simply chalk it up to daily stressors. It’s a sad fact, and one that can be easily prevented.

Mattress RatingsSix nationwide retailers say they will stop selling Simplicity bassinets implicated in the deaths of two infants. Wal-Mart, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Big Lots, Target and J.C. Penney said they will provide a refund or store credit to consumers who bought the bassinets.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning urging parents and caregivers to stop using the bassinets. That warning came eight hours after an exclusive ConsumerAffairs.com report about the dangers of the Simplicity bassinets, sold largely at Wal-Mart.

Although the agency acted swiftly after our story, critics say the agency has known about the dangers of these bassinets for months and could have prevented the recent death of six-month-old Kennedy Brotherton.

Below is a listing of Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible “Close-Sleeper” model bassinets that are included in the recall. The model number can be found on a label on the underside of the bassinet.

If you read this column frequently, you will know that I am a customer service advocate. I cannot stand poor or rude service. But what about the sales process? How should that unfold?

Well, I have spent many years around both sales and service staff in a variety of firms in many industries. It always amazes me that so few salespeople ask enough questions to even know what they should present to the prospective buyer. I have walked away from many sales reps simply because they wanted to talk, usually, I believe, just to hear their own voice. But I don’t want to talk about bad sales reps today, but rather draw a comparison with two individuals that I recently encountered.

My wife and I had been considering buying a new mattress and box springs for a few months. We decided late one afternoon to go “shopping” for one. Now, please understand, we were not going to purchase, just shop. We needed to get data before we invested the money in a major purchase. After all, a person spends at least one-third of their life in a bed.

As we entered the first store, the clerk said, “Hi,” but quickly looked at his watch. Turns out we were there about 30 minutes before closing time. I told him we were just looking, and he smiled.

Organic Baby MattressIt’s not easy being green, and that’s especially true for new parents wanting to raise a green family both for a better environment and better health for their babies. Many commercially-produced fabrics, plastics, and baby products using them contain chemicals known to be dangerous to babies. To limit that chemical exposure, parents are increasingly turning to organic baby products. This growth has been seen not only with the introduction of organics into mainstream retailers, but also online through specialty shops like Organic Baby Wearhouse.

A consumer behavior report on eco-friendly parenting was released in September 2007 by online price comparison giant PriceGrabber.com showing that “50 percent of online shoppers purchase eco friendly products because it ‘reduces the impact on future generations.’” Spreading environmental awareness to the next generation isn’t the only reason parents are buying organic, with the survey also showing that 15 percent of online shoppers are purchasing organic and environmentally-friendly products to “improve personal health.”

Unfortunately, as we’ve been seeing exposed in the news lately, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes there are questions about how ‘organic’ something really has to be to be marketed as such, and sometimes organic products contain chemicals from treatments similar to their non-organic counterparts.
“When consumers hear ‘organic’ they often automatically assume the product is ‘healthy,’” says Erick Recors, Partner and VP of Sales with Organic Baby Wearhouse. “Unfortunately, as we’ve been seeing exposed in the news lately, this isn’t always the case. Read the rest of this entry »

mattress ratings - daybedsFunctional and aesthetic, daybeds are often the perfect solution to add just that little something to impact the design of almost any room. Daybeds are twin size and can suit any height mattress.

Daybeds which allow for an additional twin size mattress stored underneath are called Trundle systems. Generally, a trundle system can be used with any Daybed, and some of them can “Pop Up” to a greater height that in effect provides a larger sleeping surface. (The equivalent to a king size mattress width, two twins laid side by side.)

When choosing a twin mattress for a trundle cavity, please be careful to limit the height of that mattress to approximately 6 (six) inches, otherwise it may be difficult to store the Trundle system under the daybed.

mattress ratings - Green IndexSpring Air has introduced the mattress industry’s first “Green Index” as a marketing tool for its popular Nature’s Rest brand in a move to help consumers better understand the natural features of the company’s bedding.

As more manufacturers offer green products, it has become increasingly difficult for consumers to differentiate between what is green and what isn’t, according to the company. Spring Air’s Green Index uses a G-Scale by which each Nature’s Rest mattress is assigned a number that corresponds to the percentages of inches of natural materials within each mattress. A point-of-sale card is placed at the foot of the mattress for full transparency to the consumer.

The “Green” entry level products carry a G01 to G49 mattress rating and include ingredients such as a Nature’s Tech soy-based polyurethane eco-friendly core, natural latex upholstery comfort levels, cashmere blended fibers, cashmere knit covers and a furniture-grade renewable wood foundation.

At the “Greener” level, products carry a G50 to G99 rating and add an upgraded latex core, an organic knit cover and natural Joma wool fibers.
